With its great history visible everywhere, today’s Madrid is a fascinating metropolis, one of the European culinary hotspots, renowned for its excellent museums. A place that, despite being colder than most of Spain, still exudes a hot Spanish soul! Join our tour to discover the essence of Madrid – a city forged by ambition, resilience, and a touch of royal madness!
Once a modest settlement whose name derives from the Arabic “Mayrit” – “a place of abundant water”, Madrid rose into importance when Philip II Habsburg moved his court here, transforming the city into the political centre of his vast empire. Right here decisions were made leading to the colonial conquests that ensured “the sun never sets” on the Spanish Empire. The wealth of the city attracted countless artists and poets – Cervantes, Velázquez and Goya, to name a few. But it was under the Bourbons, the dynasty that still holds the Spanish crown, that Madrid really flourished. In particular, Charles III, known as “the best mayor of Madrid”, spared no effort and money (sometimes not his own!) to make Madrid one of Europe’s leading metropolises, paving the way for the creation of the fascinating, modern Madrid we know today.
Our tour will start close to the majestic Royal Palace. Standing there you’re in fact entering the area where the Muslim settlement, from which Madrid grew, was established. Just opposite is the incredible Almudena Cathedral – built in a variety of neo-styles, reflecting its century-long construction. Continuing our walk, we will stop at Plaza de la Villa. Three centuries of Madrid’s architectural history are on display here, ranging from mediaeval Mudejar, influenced by Islamic art, up to Baroque. Next we will visit the iconic Plaza Mayor, a grand square that has witnessed a myriad of historical events including bullfights, public trials during the Inquisition, and opulent masquerade balls. Just a few steps away is the bustling Puerta del Sol, the very heart of Madrid, where all Spanish roads figuratively begin and where the statue of King Charles III watches over the vibrant city life. We will also see the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, where legendary artists such as Goya and Dalí once studied. You’ll learn about the magnificent Gran Vía, often compared to Times Square or Broadway, and the modernisation of the city in the 19th century. We will then stop at the Prado Museum, home to an unrivalled collection of European art, and finish the tour at the Congress of Deputies, the legislative heart of Spain and a place where Spanish democracy once almost ended. As we journey through the city and its history, we will not forget about equally important things – to show you some of the coolest places to wine and dine!
So join us to hear all about the triumphs and tragedies that have shaped Madrid, from the Habsburgs and Bourbons through the dark times of the Civil War and Francisco Franco’s dictatorship. Expect the Spanish Inquisition (although nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition!) and prepare yourself for royal drama, inbreeding, political upheaval, betrayal and intrigue… Get ready for the fascinating Madrid!
