About

If you were to name one city that over its history had the biggest impact on the world, it would be precisely this one, Rome. The cradle of western civilization, that witnessed the zeniths of human achievement and the depths of chaos and downfall. With its unparalleled historical and artistic heritage, it is one of the world’s most visited, famous and beautiful cities. No wonder they say all roads lead here – once you arrive, Rome will steal your heart forever. Come and get ready for an endless discovery of art, history, culture, elegance and passion – get ready for Rome!

The story of Rome begins with the myth of Romulus and Remus, twin brothers raised by a she-wolf, and Romulus’ founding the city in 753 BC. Despite these humble beginnings, its destiny was to become the heart of one of history’s greatest empires. Rome saw the rise of iconic leaders like Julius Caesar and Augustus, as well as architectural marvels like the Colosseum and the Pantheon. Its roads, aqueducts, and legal systems became the backbone of the empire, influencing civilizations to come. Finally ravaged by internal struggles and external invasions, Rome fell in 476 AD, marking the end of the ancient world and the beginning of the Middle Ages. Despite this, the city remained the centre of a new dominant religion, Christianity, shaping the course of European and world’s history. The Popes were commissioning works that eventually led to the Renaissance – a rebirth of art and learning. Artists like Michelangelo and Raphael, turned Rome into a gemstone, creating masterpieces like the Sistine Chapel and St. Peter’s Basilica. This process continued in the Baroque era with genius artists like Bernini and Borromini, creating swirling sculptures and dramatic fountains all over the city. The 18th century Age of Enlightenment, brought a new wave of rationalism and fascination in classicism, attracting intellectuals and artists from across Europe, who wandered the ancient streets of Rome in search of inspiration. Rome, soaked in history and art, became a pivotal stop on the Grand Tour, a rite of passage for Europe’s elite. Then came the tumultuous 19th century, a time of upheaval and rebirth. The Eternal City, witnessed the rise and fall of Napoleon, endured conflicts and uprisings, and finally emerged as the proud capital of a unified Italy. It evolved into the bustling metropolis we see today, seamlessly blending its rich past with the vibrancy of the present.

During our “Welcome to Rome” tour, you will have the chance to discover Rome’s most iconic places. Wandering around the Old Town, we will stop at Piazza Navona, a lively square that was once the site of ancient Roman games. You will also see treasures like the stately Pantheon, a temple turned into a church where some of the most influential Italian personalities are buried (i.e. King Vittorio Emanuele II and King Umberto I). Continuing our exploration, we’ll make our way to the iconic Trevi Fountain, where you can participate in the famous ritual of throwing a coin into its waters. Our route will then lead to Piazza Venezia, where the imposing Altar of the Fatherland stands – a magnificent testament to Italy’s unification. Finally, we will get to the heart of ancient Rome, the Foro Romano, where the remnants of temples and government buildings bring us back to the times of the mighty Roman Empire. Our tour will end with the view of the largest ancient amphitheatre ever built – the Colosseum – that once hosted epic gladiatorial contests and spectacles, the symbol of Roman engineering and power of entertainment. Apart from all the historical, architectural and cultural aspects of the city, there is something else we simply cannot miss showing you. The food! Rest assured that our guides will reveal their secret places to have a carbonara, amatriciana or a local favourite – cacio e pepe! And of course where to get the best Italian coffee and gelato afterwards!

Join our tour to see the most iconic places in Rome and get enchanted by the city’s staggering beauty. You will soon discover that Rome is not just another destination; it’s an experience that captures your heart and imagination. Book your tour today and prepare to fall in love with Rome!

Wished that the tour guide stayed on topic

This walking tour was well conducted and presented. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable about the old town of Krakow and we learned many of new historical facts about Krakow, Polish Kings, medieval military defenses, and the local University. Furthermore, our tour guide (Ania) was sensitive to needs of those following her. She walked at the right speed, spoke clearly, and brought everyone inside when it was clear that several us were noticing the coolness of the weather. The tour would have been perfect except for the tour guide’s selective criticism at the Catholic Church and the government of Poland, and her overt support for abortion. We came from the USA to Krakow to learn more about the realm where St. Pope John Paul II developed into a heroic leader, and were disappointed by the negativism and consideration of only one side of modern political discourse. The Catholic Church is large, has a long history, and is populated by flawed human beings; thus, it can be subject to criticism, some of it well deserved. However, tourists like ourselves (who are not Polish voters) are not likely to be uniformly appreciative of one-sided political discourse during a walking tour that should emphasize historical topics. We wish our tour guide had stayed ‘on topic’, and were left wondering about Walkative’s overall motive.

Our tour with Big Tom was great. He is so professional, knows the history and has a great sense of humor. Which we could have joined the Jewish Quarter tour.

We took the Old Town tour with Big Tom today (18 March 2023) and had a blast. We learned a lot about Krakow and the Polish people, and our entire family (parents with two adult kids) agreed that this was a great experience. Will take another tour with Walkative on Saturday and can only recommend the company and Big Tom!!!
